Bernice Sparks Porter, 93 of Olathe, KS, widow of Melvin “Pete” Porter, Sr., passed away on February 8, 2020 in Olathe, KS after suffering a stroke. She was born on April 26, 1926 in Fleming County, the daughter of William and Clarice Sparks. Bernice was a graduate of Fleming County High School. After graduation, she began a career at the RECC (now Touchstone Energy) and worked there for 54 years until she retired as the head bookkeeper at the age of 72. Though Bernice loved to work, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren even more. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Clarice Sparks and her siblings; Edith Mineer (William), Elwood Sparks (Ruby & Mitchell), Virginia Lowe Schwartz (Virgil & Paul), Clyde Sparks (Georgia), and Christine Harmon (Kenny). She is survived by her sons, Melvin Porter Jr. (Darlene) and David Porter (Laura) and her grandchildren, Zach (Amelia), Gabriel, Jack, Levi, Lucy, Will and Violet. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10am-1pm Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research at -ww5.komen.org
