James Brown

James Allen Brown, 85 of Flemingsburg, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the St. Joseph Hospital-Main in Lexington, Kentucky after a brief illness. He was born in Morgan County, Kentucky on February 13, 1935 to the late Dewey E. and Etta Susan Gambill Brown.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Janet Sue Mitchell Brown. Sisters; Ollie Wilma Brown, Martha Evaleen Brown and an infant sister.  Brothers;  Dewey E. Brown, Jr. and Proctor Brown.

Mr. Brown worked for the Kentucky Department of Transportation in Lexington, Flemingsburg, and Frankfort during his career.  He was responsible for creating the mile-marking system for the interstates in Kentucky, which other states adopted.  He also contributed to the planning of the construction of multiple bridges and roads within the state, to make sure they were safe and efficient.  He retired from the state in his last role as Director of Highway Maintenance.

He was a 1959 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in civil engineering and was a lifelong Kentucky Wildcats fan having been a basketball ticketholder since 1955. He was a member of the Fleming County Country Club and enjoyed all kinds of sports,  golf, meeting his friends at McDonalds for breakfast and spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include his children, Jim Ed (Beckie) Brown of Georgetown, Kentucky and Jan (W. Michael) Kissick of Midway, Kentucky. One brother, Jack (Wynona) Brown of London, Kentucky and four grandchildren; Cade Douglas Brown, Cole Allen Brown, Katherine Susann Brown and Clark Jameson Kissick. Also, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm Saturday, January 30, 2021 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Flemingsburg with Rev. Richard Anderson officiating.

Visitation at the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Flemingsburg is after 6:00 pm Friday.

Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery.

Pall bearers will be Michael Brown, Cade Brown, Cole Brown, Tim Letcher, Kevin Letcher, Scott Floyd and Darby Muse. Honorary bearers will be Clark Kissick, Ned Brown and David Brown.

The Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Flemingsburg is caring for all arrangements for James Allen Brown.
