Mary Crain

July 14, 1953 — October 20, 2016

Mary Markwell Crain, 63, of Lexington, KY and formerly of Barcelona, Spain, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Cambridge Place Nursing Home in Lexington. Born July 14, 1953 in Maysville, she was the daughter of Robert 'Bobby' William Crain of Flemingsburg and the late Dora Jane Hendry Crain.

Mary received her high school education at the Masters Prep School for girls in Dobbs Ferry, NY, then attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH, where she received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology, followed by receiving her Masters Degree in Anthropology with concentration in Latin American Studies, from the University of St. Louis in St. Louis, MO. Mary was awarded her PhD in Anthropological Studies from the University of Texas, where she was able to have her Spanish-written dissertation published. After moving to Barcelona, Spain, where she lived for many years, Mary became the Professor in the department of Cultural Anthropology and History of Latin America and Africa at the University of Barcelona.

Besides her father, she is survived by: her brother, Eugene Woodford Crain II of Lexington (formerly of Flemingsburg); an uncle, George (Phyllis) Hendry of Charlotte, NC; and two nieces, Lauralee Rebecca Crain (Patrick) Estill of Lexington, and Molly Gene Crain of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home officiated by Marvin Suit. Visitation will be 10am to 12pm Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fleming County Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Dr., Maysville, KY 41056.
