Susan Bainum

September 24, 1918 — March 1, 2015

Susan Elaine Bainum was born in Aliquippa, PA September 24, 1918 and departed this life in Maysville, KY March 1, 2015. She was the third child of Harrison S. and Helen K. Gerdes.

They moved to Cincinnati, OH, where she successfully completed her business studies at Withrow High School. Her first position after graduation was as secretary at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church serving under the Rev. Benjamin Judd. The Rev. Mr. Judd united she and Allen Calvin Bainum in Christian marriage on November 9, 1937. Their union was blessed by three sons and was to last nearly 74 years.

Susan and Calvin were charter members of the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, OH. She was for many years the much loved secretary at Whitaker Elementary School in Finneytown, OH. They retired to their farm in Fleming County in 1980, joining with the congregation at First Presbyterian Church, Flemingsburg and were accorded many years of peaceful country life together. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Joseph, Grant David, John Franklin, and a sister, Dorothea; and two of her three sons, an infant child, and William Calvin Bainum in 1994. Her beloved husband Calvin departed this life March 4, 2011.

She is survived by son, Barry Alan Bainum and daughter-in-law Gretchen De Weese Bainum; three grandchildren, Jessica Ann Pollio of Louisville, KY, Rebecca Jane Poole of Winchester, KY, and Nathan Alan Bainum of Ft. Collins, CO; and three great-grandchildren, Gennevieve Susan Pollio, Gabbrielle Taylor Poole, and Patrick Calvin Poole; and grandsons-in-law, Dr. Martin Pollio of Louisville, KY, and Kevin Poole, Basin Springs Farm, Winchester, KY.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church - Flemingsburg officiated by Rev. Norman Wasson. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, OH. Memorial gifts are suggested to a favored charity of one's choice.
